Heart Lotus

The Ace of Cups is the Holy Grail, which is the womb. The miracle of new life and the pure love it generates! The primordial sea from which we all emerged. I was inspired by the shape of the womb, which is so like a heart, and the shapes of the fallopian tubes, like Nautilus shells. A lotus made of heart shaped petals.
This card manifested very quickly like a miracle. I did feel my heart open too, just as I felt the practical wisdom of the Disc Ace. Suddenly I was able to forgive people I had been angry at so easily. Very strange!
To understand the pips it is useful to study the Tree of Life. The Aces are Kether. The unmanifested spirit of an element. They are the magical weapons of the magus.
I’ve been thinking about what Digital Dame said last month about writing a book to go with these cards. I realized that the whole point of painting pictures is to express ideas that are indescribable in words. Quite often I make symbolic connections long after finishing a work so I am wary of trying to define them or explain them, when it’s quite likely I am yet to understand their full significance. Moreover I would much rather let people find their own meanings. This I think is the real power of art. To encourage people to trust their own impressions and intuitions.

  1. I hope you haven’t entirely abandoned the idea of a book. I know many readers appreciate understanding what the artist of a deck had in mind when incorporating elements into their cards. This is gorgeous, the colors are like the gentle colors of a nursery, the blues and pinks.

    • No I doubt I’ll be able to resist publishing something with it. Maybe a kind of free form poetry of associations.
Actually I expect it will end up being much like what I write in here. It just amazes me sometimes in retrospect what I have painted. Even the reading I do comes to me very much by chance. I get all my books from a church charity shop and whatever turns up is what I read. This is also amazing in its synchronicity.
