This card is dedicated to Masahiko Shimura, whose wonderful music inspired me and kept me company while I was painting.  I don’t usually talk much about the music I listen to even though it is intrinsic to the whole project, but I want to talk about Mr Shimura and his band Fujifabric. He was an incredible artist, the pure essence of an artist who sacrificed everything for his art, a sublime young genius whose life was cut so tragically short. His death, just over a year ago, was a huge loss to us all, even if most of us don’t know it yet. If anyone has embodied the principle of universal love it is this amazing young man. This song ANTHEM, is one of the last he wrote and recorded before he died.  It was hard to choose a song to link to because he has so much great music, but this feels like it might be the most accessible for those unused to the Japanese style. If you want to know more about him please refer to the wonderful blog my friend is writing. She has translated many songs and all her posts into English and it is a fascinating insight. That someone should take the trouble to write us all such a message from the heart says everything about what Shimura represented.

I had some other waffle written for this card, but I don’t really want to clutter this tribute to dear Shimura kun. May he rest in peace! And live on forever in our hearts!

  1. Another beauty 🙂 I’m not familiar with the musician who inspired it, but have often been inspired by music myself. I’ll have to go read up on him and listen to his music.

    • Fab Fox is my favourite album, unsurprisingly.

Music is my fuel. It goes in, Art comes out. No music, no art.

I know it’s a very subjective thing, so I don’t like to foist my tastes on people but I can’t help getting angry when artists as incredible as Shimura aren’t given the recognition and world wide exposure they deserve.

Problem being if they unleashed people like him on Western audiences how would they then be able to sell all the gobshite currently on on their books?

Excuse the rant. I seem doomed to be offensive these days. 😀
I am doing Peace now so lets hope I can chill out…

Wow… I really love your drawing!

The feel of love is flowing out from the painting forming an aura, I can sense it.
You must be an incredible lady who is able to convert music into another type of art.

It is such a wonderful reward for me to get to know someone like you who appreciates his work in exactly the same way that I do regardless cultural and language differences.

I will continue running my blog as long as I can to draw people’s attention to Fujifabric’s beautiful music, and I wish that will indirectly help Shimura kun’s dream to come true.

I thank gods for leading me to his music from the bottom of my heart.

    • Thank you very much! 🙂

I am very happy to have met you too! It’s a wonderful thing to be given a chance to really understand the depths of an artist I can only guess at. So thank you for all your translations and for your warm hearted friendliness.

I am also very grateful to Shimura kun and to all the wonderful Japanese musicians who inspire me keep painting. Without them I really don’t think I could do it. It certainly would be very lonely. It’s not just their music that inspires me, but their spirit and dedication. If I can give half as much of myself to my art as Shimura did, I will be very proud indeed.
